You have made some progress in terms of balancing your work and your life, but you do have a ways to go. England does have laws that prohibit employees working too many hours per week or in a row. Workers who work on public holidays in England are compensated at least 1.5 times, and on average have 21 days of holiday a year. However, Brits also have the highest rate in Europe of working nights and weekends, and it is widely considered that they work the longest hours of any European country.
If you work like a Brit, here are three strategies you can use to further improve your work-life balance.
1. Enlist the Help of Others.
You don't have to do it all yourself! Get family members to help with chores, arrange a carpool to pick the kids up from school, and split the errands with your partner.
2. Prioritize.
Decide what is important to you right now and make time for it in your life. This could be your career, your family, or your relationship. As Oprah Winfrey once said, "You can have everything, but not all at the same time."
3. Plan for the Long Term.
If you have a long term goal or plan in mind, as to where you want to end up in your career, working long hours now can pay off for you later. For example, you might work extra long hours as you set up your business, but once it begins to run and become profitable, you can entrust some of the workload to your managers and employees.
